Experts say the rise of artificial intelligence will make most people better off over the next decade, but many have concerns about how developments in artificial intelligence will affect what it means to be human, to be productive and to be free-willed.

Some 979 technology pioneers, innovators, developers, business and policy leaders, researchers and activists responded in a survey of experts conducted in the summer of 2018.
Experts predicted that networked artificial intelligence would increase human productivity but also threaten human autonomy, institution and capabilities. They spoke of wide-ranging possibilities that computers could match or even exceed human intelligence and abilities in tasks such as complex decision-making, reasoning and learning, complex analytics and pattern recognition, visual acuity, speech recognition, and language translation. In communities, vehicles, buildings and plants, farms, and business processes “smart” systems of time, money and lives that will save, and individuals to enjoy a more customized would offer future opportunities for said.
Many have focused their optimistic words on health care and the many possible AI applications in diagnosing and treating patients or helping senior citizens lead a fuller and healthier life. They are also keen on AI’s role in contributing to vast public health programs built on huge amounts of data that could be obtained in future years on everything from personal genomes to nutrition. Additionally, some of these experts predicted that AI would lead to long-awaited changes in formal and non-formal education systems.
However, most experts expressed concern about the long-term impact of these new tools on the essential elements of being human, regardless of whether they were optimistic or not. All participants in this unscientific spread were asked to explain why they thought AI would leave people in better shape. Many shared deep concerns, and many also suggested paths to solutions.
- Concerns about human agency, evolution and survival
A clear majority of the responses from these experts included material that indicated some challenges, fears or concerns about the AI-induced infused future. The five most frequently cited concerns were: 1) use of AI reduces control over individuals ‘ lives; 2) surveillance and data systems designed primarily for efficiency, profit, and control are inherently dangerous; 3) displacement of human jobs with AI would likely widen economic and digital divisions, leading to economic and social upheaval; 4) of the individuals cognitive, social and survival skills as it becomes dependent AI will be reduced; and 5) citizens and organizations exposure to cyber crime and cyber war out of control, armed with the basic information such as the possibility of Hazard will be exposed to more vulnerability. AI use reduces individuals ‘ control over their lives
Autonomous systems can reduce or eliminate the need for human involvement in certain tasks. Today’s ever – evolving artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) tools-for example, search engines and digital “agents” such as Siri, Alexa and Cortana are nowhere near achieving the human-like artificial general intelligence (AGI) goal. However, they are becoming ever more powerful thanks to advances in machine learning and natural language processing, and advances in materials science, networking, energy storage and hardware capabilities.

Many experts in this expansion said human autonomy and agency were at risk as AI progressed. They note that decision-making about key aspects of life is based on coded means. Individuals working in this digital world sacrifice to varying degrees their independence, their right to privacy and their power to choose. Many of the experts who are concerned about this say that people participate in it to be able to compete, participate socially and professionally in the world, have fun and do their jobs. They say people have taken control of their lives because of their efficiency, convenience and superior pattern recognition, data storage and search – and-find capabilities-the perceived advantages they get with digital tools. An anonymous contributor summed up the concerns many wrote: “the most feared reversal of the age of AI in human wealth is agency loss. The trade-off that comes with being close to the near, low-friction convenience of Digital Life is a loss of context and control about its processes. People’s blind dependence on digital tools is getting deeper as automated systems become more complex, and ownership of those systems is getting deeper by the elites, ”he said.
